Iranian envoy denies false reports of Azeri paper

LONDON, Feb 23 (iranMania) - Iran's Ambassador to Azerbaijan Afshar Soleymani on Tuesday termed as "false" and "unfounded" the report by an Azeri newspaper claiming that the ambassador was "summoned" to the Foreign Ministry of Azerbaijan. "It was a meeting and not a summon," Soleymani told IRNA in Baku commenting on the issue. Iran's Embassy in the Azeri capital of Baku also released a statement on Tuesday saying that Soleymani was not summoned by Azeri Deputy Foreign Minister for Economic Affairs Mahmud Mohammad Guliyev but just held a meeting with him. The two officials discussed procedures to implement Tehran-Baku joint economic projects based on agreements that were signed by the Iranian and Azeri officials during their visits to Tehran and Baku, added the statement. The Azeri paper 'Express,' had claimed in a biased report in its Tuesday edition that Soleymani was summoned by Guliyev to present Tehran's explanation on the issue of a mistakenly placing of the Azeri flag during a meeting of Azeri President Ilham Aliyev with Iranian officials. Aliyev visited Iran for the first time in late January 2005 at the invitation of his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Khatami who, in a visit to Azerbaijan in August 2004, had invited him to visit Iran.
