IRFS: JOURNALISTS DISTANCED FROM SCENE OF MAJOR CONSTRUCTION ACCIDENT

Today, at approximately 4:00 p.m. in the Yasamal District of Baku the already built 12 stories of what was to be a 16-storey apartment building collapsed. "Mutafakkir" Housing Construction Firm was carrying out the construction of this building. According to the latest reports at least 15 people were killed in the accident and 20 others injured. Several workers remain trapped in the wreckage, and it is anticipated the number of fatalities will grow in the coming days.
The Institute for Reporters' Freedom and Safety conducted monitoring at the scene. As soon as high-ranking officials including Presidential Administration Chairman Ramiz Mehdiyev, Minister of Emergency Situations Kamaleddin Heydarov, Minister of Interior Ramil Usubov, and General Prosecutor Zakir Garalov arrived all soldiers and police officers from the Ministry of Interior were ordered to distance journalists from the scene.
