Russia modernizes its military base in Armenia
Armenia’s National Security Council Secretary, Defense Minister Serzh Sargsyan welcomed Russia’s intention to modernize equipment of Russian military base 102 in Gyumri and deliver modern weapons there. The minister made the statement to Armenia’s Public Channel on December 27.
Speaking on concern expressed by Azerbaijan’s defense minister about shipment of Russian weapons to Armenia, Serzh Sargsyan said that Yerevan had never asked why Baku was buying numerous MIG 29 planes and other military equipment from Kiev. At the minister stressed that it was not Armenia who was bragging about its military spendings, and “it was not us who started the arms race.” “The issue of delivering Russian arms to Armenia concerns only Armenia and Russia and we are not obliged to ask a permission from anyone,” the Armenian defense minister stressed saying: “they should mind their own business and we ours.” “I would twice happier, if Russia decides to hand over portion of this ultra-modern equipment to Armenia’s Armed Forces,” he added.
