Kyrgyz politician: “Interests of Russia and the USA can clash in Turkmenistan”
Leader of Kyrgyz Movement Civil Reform Alisher Mamasaliyev commented to a REGNUM correspondent on reports of Saparmurat Niyazov’s death. According to the politician, in Turkmenistan, as there is no alternative to the Turkmenbashi, a political confrontation can arise, in which world power might take part as well.
“The report on Niyazov’s death was unexpected news, we all do remember official statements of doctors after Turkmenbashi’s medical examination that he was absolutely in good health,” Alisher Mamsaliyev said.
According to the Kyrgyz politician, Saparmurat Niyazov’s death can result in political changes: under the constitution, after death of the president, presidential election should be announced no later than in two months. However, it is worth mentioning, now there is no alternative, no possible candidates, as a result a political confrontation can start in Turkmenistan."
“Turkmenistan is very interesting for Russia and for the USA as well,” the Civil Reform Movement leader pointed out. “Turkmenistan has significant amounts of strategic resources that allowed the Turkmenbashi to carry out an independent policy. Interests of world leading powers can clash in Turkmenistan, so, interesting political events expect us in 2007.”
Alisher Mamasaliyev does not rule out a possibility that before, during and after the election the army and security services will show themselves as a political force. At the same time, there is a possibility that young democratic forces will come to power. The opposition should take advantage of the situation and prevent from one totalitarian regime replacing the other one."
